There are 129 different species of Maple - most of which are native to Asia, with certain species also being found throughout Europe, North Africa and North America. Maple has long been used in the United States for a variety of items, from baseball bats and bowling pins to fine furniture and musical instruments, desirable for its distinctive honey-colored glow and strength. The variety we employ in our iPhone 4/4S backs is North American Sugar Maple with a Birdseye pattern - a phenomenon that occurs only in select trees which resembles tiny swirled eyes mixed in with the grain pattern. After sanding and finishing, the texture of Birdseye Maple is smooth with little apparent grain, offering a surface that will not fingerprint while still offering superior durability and feel.
